The Ofot Line
Back in the 1800s the Ofoten railway line was built to secure access to an ice-free port for the plentiful iron ore deposits from Sweden. At the most over 5000 people took part in constructing the track, many of them itinerant workers, so called “rallers” seeking new opportunities.
On the Arctic Train you will have plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs, check out the area and listen to the guides tell you all about the rich history. The line follows the fjord in Narvik all the way to the snow-capped mountains at the Swedish border. The route has a constant climb all the way to Bjørnfjell, the first stop on this line.
More than just a train ride
This line was particularly important to control during WW2 as it served as an export route for the biggest and most important iron ore reserves in Europe. Due to this, a lot of the warfare during the war took place in the immediate vicinity of the railway. Read more and book tickets to the Arctic Train.
